They're just boobs!

For your average person with a 2.5cm tumor in one breast, treatment plan may consist of a lumpectomy followed by radiation. However, because I'm only 39, and more importantly because the genetic testing results came back as BRCA2 positive (which means I'm at very high risk for early onset breast and ovarian cancer) the Dr's strongly recommended I have a bilateral mastectomy. As strange as this sounds to some people, this was not a decision we struggled with. We immediately said, 'take them both!' Breast cancer is something that is so highly curable, provided it is caught early. So in our minds, it wasn't even really a question. If you know you are at very high risk for cancer to come back in the other breast, why not take it off? Because really...they're just boobs! They've served their purpose, I'm done having kids and now I would just like to do whatever I can to insure I'm here to raise those kids. In an effort at full disclosure, I will admit it's not as easy as it sounds. In our heads it made perfect sense to just chop them off! But there is obviously a lot of psychological impact that goes along with that. So we're trying to focus on the positive. There are some great options for reconstructive surgery one day if we decide to opt for that, and in the mean time, I'll just order one of these great scarves that my sister Dawn found for me:)
